your mental well-being
Mental and emotional wellbeing are closely linked, as our thoughts and feelings are entwined. Sad or anxious feelings, as well as physical illness, can undermine mental health, but serious mental illness, such as psychosis or bi-polar, needs medical diagnosis and the expertise of mental health professionals before complementary approaches can be considered.
Mental wellbeing is best described as clarity of thought, self-esteem and resilience. A mentally well person can cope with their life and has a healthy perspective on everyday challenges with realistic expectations and ambitions. They have stable relationships based on equality and mutual give and take.
Many people without mental illness experience unwanted or intrusive thoughts; humans are complex beings with many 'background programmes' running in their sub-conscious. For the most part these cause no problems, but EFT is a good technique for assisting in quietening a critical inner voice or mildly obsessive thought patterns, supporting clear thinking and enabling you to focus on what you want from life, rather than on the negative aspects.
Reiki is particularly well-suited to those with mental health issues because it requires no input from the client. It can promote a sense of relaxation and peace, which supports recovery alongside conventional treatments.

for adults
- Mental illness, such as depression, is no different to any other illness. Feeling ashamed is a symptom of depression - so be aware when you are feeling that you can't cope that wanting to hide it is normal, but not useful. Seek help.
- Having close relationships, whether friends, family or a partner, can help you avoid mental illness, because having someone you can trust to confide in (and have fun with!) can maintain wellbeing.
- Eating well, fresh air, music, hobbies and resting, also promote mental health.
for children
- It is now recognised that even young children can experience mental health problems. Increasingly children are suffering from stress and depression due to pressures at school, at home or trauma. Be aware of a change in your child's behaviour and seek advice if you are concerned.
- Living a happy and healthy life promotes mental wellbeing. Less screen time and more nature time is beneficial to children and adults alike.
- Attachment refers to the bond between child and primary carer - be that mother, father or another significant adult. A secure attachment, where the child feels valued and supported throughout childhood, can help to support mental health both now and as adults in the future.
